About Course

In the Iyengar tradition, the restorative qualities of Viparita Karani are harnessed by making possible long supported holds. This position/ action finds mention in the yogic scriptures ( indeed, its benefits are said to be ‘death defying’), but without clear description.  It was Mr BKS Iyengar who not only interpreted the action, but also made it accessible to almost everyone through the use of props.   In his book, ‘Yoga – The Path to Wholistic Health’, BKS Iyengar says this asana boosts confidence and alleviates nervous exhaustion.

But Viparita karani is not a beginner-level action, even with the use of props/ supports.  It involves a peculiar combination of actions that encompasses, back arches, forward extensions, abdominal actions and inversions.  In this short course, we build up to this deeply penetrative position.  We look at fully supported variations of Viparita karani, as well as more challenging ways of exploring this position in various inverted positions, with varying amounts of support.

Course Content

Part1: Connecting Shoulder blades to Back Ribs for Back Arches and Twists
This session explores the role of the shoulder blades in accessing the how we hold our chest: lifted or slumped. Part2: Sacrum as the Fulcrum: Transition From Back Arches to Forward Extensions
This session looks at the fulcrum like position of the sacrum in back arches and forward extensions.  We explore if forward extensions and back arches are opposites of each other, mirrors to each other, or parts of the same continuum? Explore the beautiful relationship playing out in our body, culminating in supported and deeply restful viparita karani in the subsequent sessions. Part 3: Back Arches and Forward Extensions,  Culminating in Viparita Karani
This session looks at the fulcrum-like position of the sacrum in back arches and forward extensions: are they opposites of each other, mirrors to each other, or parts of the same continuum? Explore the beautiful relationship playing out in our body, culminating in supported and deeply restful viparita karani. Level: Experienced Beginner, Intermediate Duration: 90mins Props needed: a yoga chair, strap, two bolsters or a equivalent stack of blankets, plate weights (optional) This session is part of the following Short Courses: Viparita Karani Deep Dive: the Serenity of the Inverted Lake(Short Course Level: Intermediate), and Viparita Karani Deep Dive: the Serenity of the Inverted Lake (Short Course Level: Experienced Beginners, Gentle)

Part 4: Viparita Karani Action in Inverted Positions
In his book, ‘Yoga – The Path to Wholistic Health’, BKS Iyengar says viparita karani boosts confidence and alleviates nervous exhaustion. However, the ‘viparita karani’ action can be done in other inverted positions with varying degrees of support. In this session, we look at a few different ways of executing this position.
