Backward extensions are regarded as a relatively ‘advanced’ category of asanas. They require both suppleness and strength in the back muscles, and connection between the limbs and the back. But it is not just the ‘back’ that is acting in ‘back arches’. After all, this category of asanas is called ‘purva pratana sthiti’ (expansion of the frontal plane) in Sanskrit. This session explores the involvement of the frontal plane of the body as we prepare for back arching.
Note:
Those with shoulder injury are advised caution in overhead arm positions. Those with back injuries/ weakness should approach back arches with caution
